PENRYN

WITH THE VILLAGE OF BUDOCK AND NEIGHBOURHOODS.

Penryn is a market town, and parliamentary borough, in the parish of Gluvias and hundred of Kerrier, two miles from Falmouth; situated at the head of a creek connected with the harbour of Falmouth. It is a place of brisk general trade, and derives material advantage from the large granite quarries in its neighbourhood; of this stone large quantities are exported to the metropolis and other parts. There are several very respectable merchants in this place, and manufactories for paper, woollen cloth and gunpowder, also paint and arsenic works, corn mills and breweries; and it possesses a quay for the convenience of shipping. The 'King's Arms Hotel' is the principal inn here, and is a very respectable house. Penryn was first incorporated in the 18th of James I, and was re-incorporated by the Municipal Reform Act, passed in 1835, which vested government of the borough in a mayor, four aldermen and twelve councillors, under the title of 'the mayor and burgesses of Penryn, in the county of Cornwall.' The corporation hold a court of session quarterly. The borough has regularly sent two members to parliament since the reign of Mary: the mayor is the returning officer, and the elective privilege is regulated by the Reform Bill.

The parish church of Saint Gluvias, which stands at some distance from the main road, is a handsome and spacious structure, encircled by groves of trees, and its situation altogether ia picturesquely beautiful. The living of St. Gluvias is a vicarage, in the patronage of the See of Exeter. In the parish are places of worship for Independents, Wesleyan Methodists, and Bryanities. The market is held on Saturday; and the fairs, on the 13th March, 13th May, 8th July, 8th October, and 21st December. The parish of Gluvias (including Penryn borough) contained, in 1831 , 4,490 inhabitants; and in 1841 4,484: the population of the borough, at the last stated period, was 3,764.

BUDOCK is a village and parish in the same hundred as Penryn, about two miles from that town, and the like distance from Falmouth. The parish is bounded on the east by Falmouth Bay and the English Channel. The places of worship are, the parish church, and a chapel for Wesleyan Methodists. The living of Budock is a perpetual curacy, united to the vicarage of Saint Gluvias. The population of the parish (which extends into the town of Falmouth), in 1841, was 1,979.
