PENRYN

A market town and parliamentary borough, in the parish of Gluvias and hundred of Kerrier, is two miles from Falmouth, situated at the head of a branch or creek running from Falmouth harbour, of which there is a fine view; and is surrounded by a bold and varied country. Penryn was incorporated by James I.; the corporation consists of a mayor, eight aldermen and 12 common councilmen, a recorder and inferior officers. The inhabitants paying scot and lot six months prior to elections, and proprietors resident 40 days before and paying rates, are entitled to vote; the number is about 400: the present members are, Wm. Manning and David Barclay, Esqrs. Penryn is a place of pretty good general trade, and enjoys an extensive one in granite, of which large quarries are in the neighbourhood; great quantities of this stone are shipped at the quay here, for London and other parts. There are also manufactories for paper, one for woollen cloth, gunpowder and arsenic works, and a considerable establishment for making paint, called 'The Cornish Colour Company.' There are also many corn-mills, and some good breweries.
The parish church of St. Gluvias is a spacious and handsome building, surrounded by groves of trees; its situation and accompaniments well repay the admirer of picturesque beauty for deviating from the main road to observe them. The living is a vicarage, in the gift of the see of Exeter; and the present incumbent is the Venerable Archdeacon Sheepshanks. There is another church under the establishment at Budock; and in the parish are meeting-houses for the service of the independent and Wesleyan methodists, Calvinists and Bryanites. The road, for two miles from Penryn towards Truro, passes through a well cultivated and fertile country, finely broken and tolerably well covered with wood, and adorned with several elegant seats: those claiming particular notice are, 'Enys', the seat of J.S. Enys, Esq.; 'Carclew', Sir Charles Lemon, Bart.; 'Rosorrow', the property of Lord de Dunstanville; and 'Bella Vista', the charming residence of James Edwards, Esq. The market day is Saturday; the fairs are, the first Wednesday after the 6th March, May 12th, July 7th, October 8th, and December 11th. The entire parish of Gluvias contained, by the last population returns, 3,678 inhabitants, and the borough 2,933 of that number.
